Is it me or are cinemas awash with fashion documentary films? Now we have a film following the ultra glamorous Valentino in the run up to his 45th anniversary collection in 2007. Filmed by Vanity Fair reporter Matt Tymauer and like most fashion films, The Last Emperor is full of the most beautiful dresses and documents a life of luxury, but there is more here than meets the eye.

If there is one thing that catches my attention throughout the film it’s the portrayal of the relationship between Valentino and his business manager/lifelong boyfriend Giancarlo Giammetti. There are glimpses of love, respect and reality, not to mention the honest feedback when Giammetti tells Valentino he looked a little too tanned. We see how the pair balances each other out; Giammetti is charming and sociable while Valentino can come across as prickly and demanding.

There is a more sinister angle in the film which shows the transition of fashion as art and luxury bending to the will of new corporate bosses that have profits on their minds. The air becomes thick with rumors of the new corporation forcing Valentino into retirement and we see the will of Valentino fight for the identity of the brand he so passionately built up.

The luxury life we are shown puts even certain royalty to shame. We see the palace outside Paris, the villa in Rome, a private jet that carries not only Valentino but his six pugs and the yacht. A true rich and fabulous lifestyle, but after 50 years success in the fashion business it has all been worked hard for. We get to see little of Valentino working but the pieces we do see tell us just what a quick thinking genius he is. There is one scene were at the very last moment he designs and puts together a dress before showing the collection, his team work fast wrapping fabric around a model and off she trots down the catwalk.

A stylish and sumptuous film that gives a little of everything to keep you watching. From the remarkable and beautiful to the strange yet desirable. It’s like a Vanity Fair article in moving pictures.

‘Fashion is not about looking back, its always about looking forward’ -- Anna Wintour.

Anna Wintour is not just the editor-in-chief of the worlds most read fashion magazine, American Vogue, she is more like the Empress at the helm of the global fashion business worth some $350 billion. As in the words from the movie The Devil Wears Prada ‘her opinion is the only opinion.’

More photographed than many A list hollywood stars or supermodels, it is no wonder that R.J. Cutler wanted to film behind the scenes at American Vogue and document the Empress in her domain to get a true reflection of how she works. SHINE finds out if the rumors are true.

The September Issue makes The Devil Wear Prada look like kids play. The british born 59 year old Wintour is followed around along with her army of editors for most of 2007 leading up the the publication of the September issue of Vogue. Why September? It is the biggest issue of the entire year, a total of 840 pages (727 which are adverts!).

With her trademark big sunglasses and severe bob, Wintour is seen touring the shows. She gets Prada to redo some of their designs, manages to get the head designer at Yves Saint Laurent flustered and rethink his collection as well get Milan fashion week moved to suit her diary. She is heard saying Sienna Miller is too toothy with lackluster hair. But I guess that this honesty and fearless demeanor is what makes this lady so great and passionate about fashion and Vogue.

As well as Wintour herself, the film also includes her hardworking and quirky editors such as Andre Leon Talley and Grace Coddington who as a former model joined Vogue on the same day as Wintour and now holds the number two position. Anna even admits to not being able to live without Coddington. We even get a glimpse of her daughter Bee, who is caught saying to the camera, “Some of the people in there [the Vogue office] act as if fashion is life,” says Bee to the camera at one point. “And I know that it is really fun, and amusing. But there are other things out there.”

The film is riveting and revealing. Nothing is airbrushed to show a kinder side to any of the characters that appear. My honest opinion? A true reflection of how one woman changes the way we view fashion and how a powerful drive can change the world. As well as being pure entertainment for any follower of fashion it also gives food for thought of how one woman made her dream come true.

A must see film that will leave you inspired and ready tackle the world.

Coco Chanel changed the way women dressed forever. Her innovative style and meticulous eye for detail released women in the 20th century from the overdressed style that suffocated the high society gal about town. Even today, Chanel continues to push boundaries as well as staying true to it’s unique style which underpin the brands position as one of the most chic fashion houses of our time.

Co written by Anne Fontaine and her sister Camille Fontaine, the movie mainly focuses on Coco’s late 20’s when she started to showcase her creative vision. With a life touched by poverty and tragedy the opening sequence shows a young Chanel arriving at Catholic orphanage after the death of her mother. The religious dress and stark surroundings were to be the inspiration for her simple, yet sophisticated designs.

The film then jumps to Chanel, played by Audrey Tautou, a decade later working day and night as a cabaret entertainer to pay for her dresses. This is the period where Chanel, real name Gabrielle, earned her name Coco. Meeting the debauched heir Etienne Balsan at this time was the catalyst for her rise in society and ultimately to the House of Chanel.

A string of love affairs followed which gave Chanel the leverage and want to escape the kept woman status and follow her dream through to fruition with relentless hard work and eye for style in a more pure, elegant style.

The movie is a pleasure to watch both in how Chanel is portrayed and the crisp visuals. This is Audrey Tautou’s finest movies to date, acting the part to perfection including Chanel’s permanent but attractive pout. The film is ultimately about fashion, but will also appeal to an audience looking for inspiration in their own lives. Not to be missed.

Here at SHINE Magazine we love sunshine, beach and sea, but we also don’t mind a little bit of fun in the mud and rain, especially when it comes to attending Glastonbury festival. And just look at the weather forecast – heavy rain showers! Expectations will be met!

For those of you, dear readers, who are not familiar (where are you from – please tell us!) with the UK’s most famous festival, it is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world and a template for all the festivals that have come after it. It was started in 1970 the day after Jimi Hendrix has died. Back in the days it was 1 British pound to attend and you would get free milk from the local farm, now it is 175 British pounds (285 USD) and no free milk!

Burton reveals in Sci Fi Wire more details about the concept and that he respects the story as it is:

It’s just such a classic, and the imagery is so surreal,” Burton said in an interview while promoting his film -- Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. “I don’t know; I’ve never seen a version where I feel like they got it all. It’s a series of weird adventures, and to try to do it where it works as a movie will be interesting.”

The stories are like drugs for children, you know?” Burton said. “It’s like, ‘Whoa, man.’ The imagery, they’ve never quite nailed making it compelling as a full story. So I think it’s an interesting challenge to direct.”

The film begins when Alice, now 17, is attending a party. She unexpectedly finds out that she is about to be proposed in front of hundreds of hundreds snooty high society types. She escapes and ends up following the white rabbit down the hole, back to Wonderland – a place she visited before, but has no memories about. The creatures of Wonderland are on the wedge of revolt and were waiting for Alice to come and help them. But will she? Can she?

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland will hit theaters on March 5th 2010.

There are many words to describe the pop worlds new princess. Unique, crazy, utterly original and sexy are just a simple few. Lady Gaga is storming the charts and now the world’s most famous magazine covers. Rolling Stone, one of the great music magazines of our time has gone peroxide blond and pink in celebration of 2009’s greatest music sensation. Shine takes a look at the wardrobe of pop culture’s future.

From an Italian New York family, Lady Gaga’s real name is Stefania Gabriella Germanotta. The 23 year old claims to take her inspiration from Cyndi Lauper, Queen and David Bowie, which would explain her original sound and look, all with an 80’s twist. “I always loved rock and pop and theater. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie, that’s when it really came together for me and I realized I could do all three,” say’s Gaga. She designs and makes many of her stage outfits herself and cites Donatella Versace and Peggy Bundy as her icons. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And, that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.”

Hot pants and boob tubes, sequins and leather, PVC and shoulder pads. There certainly is a mix of styles. But somehow they work, transforming Lady Gaga into style icon in her own right. The rock makeup of lightning flashes across her face and bold colours of red lips and aqua eye shadow transforms the look into a modern and edgy chic style that will almost certainly inspire a generation to stand out from the crowd.

For the Rolling Stones shoot, Gaga uses a geometric leather designed jacket with a black satin bra and body painted trousers. The cover is an almost pretty in pink, candy girl versus crimped peroxide blond, sex bomb shell. She certainly is trying to change the way we she sexy. “And, now, I’m just trying to change the world one sequin at a time.”
