Globe Trotter – Not Made in China Part One
These days when I look around, all I see is ‘Made In China’, from clothes to cars. China seems to somehow have become a leading authority on just about everything. I live in a city where the cosmopolitan mix of cultures and ethnic backgrounds is astounding. London stands for the future of a global intertwined world, which is what makes this city so full of passion for the power of just being part of the human race, not just a british identity. This was not always the case for me. I grew up on a farm in the depths of the English countryside. A world which is still positively British. People sometimes sneer at the thought of my back water childhood, but for me, I feel proud. Here, over the next few months, I will look at some of the great British brands. Made in Britain, all the way.
When I think of a luxury travelling companion, there is no other choice than Globe Trotter. Founded by Englishman David Nelkin, originally in Germany in 1897 but which moved to London in 1901, and since that time has been known as “The Quintessential British Suitcase”.
How would you describe a Globe Trotter suitcase? Well first of all let’s leave out the ‘suitcase’ word, it’s far from a plain, practical case. In a pure British way, it’s an unfussy, simple design but immensely strong. I like to call it my travel companion. Made from vulcanised fibreboard with leather trim the case is constructed entirely by hand. They have graced the catwalk, they are the choice of the Queen and have been iconic cases through the years used by Winston Churchill and Scott of the Antarctic. These days Kate Moss, Dita Von Teese, Daniel Craig and Ronnie Wood are a few of the rich and famous that choose Globe Trotter.
There is a wealth of colours to choose from, the original dark blue, black or brown to the modern ivory, red, green and burnt orange. If you are feeling rather creative you can even visit, by appointment only, the Burlington Arcade store for a bespoke range of your very own. Your travel companion should never just be practical. Globe Trotter – making a style statement on the move.
